Every manufacturer has to rate its equipment through testing required by the Department of Energy, so you can see what you are getting. A higher rating is easier on your utility bill. You will pay more up front for a higher efficiency model, but the savings in operating costs can help pay back the investment over time, and higher efficiency units often have other useful features. The indoor and outdoor units need to match, which is one more reason a proper installation matters. Build quality counts as well. A powder-painted coating helps fight rust over the years, louvered grilles keep debris like lawn mower clippings and hail out of the coil, and a heavy steel cabinet helps the outdoor unit last and look good. Better units are also much quieter, and at low to medium speeds you may barely hear one running.
